Turkey’s automotive main industry closed 2025 with a strong export performance, reaching an all-time high of $41.5 billion in export value. While total production increased by 4% to 1.42 million units, export revenues grew by 12%, supported by market demand and favorable exchange rate conditions.
Europe Remains the Key Export Market
Speaking at the sector’s annual evaluation meeting, the Chairman of the Automotive Manufacturers Association of Turkey stated that production and export levels in 2026 are expected to follow a similar trend. He also emphasized that the European Union’s upcoming incentive framework based on rules of origin will be closely monitored by the industry.
Approximately 70% of Turkey’s automotive exports are directed to the European Union and neighboring European markets, making regional demand and the euro–dollar parity critical factors for export performance.
Light Commercial Vehicles Set a New Export Record
Despite a contraction in Europe’s light commercial vehicle market during 2025, Turkey’s exports in this segment reached a record level of approximately 435,000 units. New production models expected to come online are projected to support export volumes and mitigate market slowdowns.
This performance highlights Turkey’s flexibility in production and its strategic role within Europe’s automotive supply chain.
Capacity Utilization and Trade Balance Remain in Focus
Recent investments increased Turkey’s automotive production capacity from 2 million to 2.2 million units, while capacity utilization declined to 67%. Industry representatives underline that improving this ratio will be crucial to maintaining international competitiveness.
At the same time, rising vehicle imports continue to impact the foreign trade balance. In the first eleven months of 2025, Turkey’s automotive trade deficit reached $7.7 billion, reinforcing the importance of expanding domestic production and increasing the share of locally manufactured vehicles in the internal market.
Turkey’s Strong Position in the European Market
In 2025, European passenger car sales reached 12.1 million units, while Turkey maintained its position as Europe’s fourth-largest vehicle export market. European countries continue to be the primary destination for vehicles manufactured in Turkey.
ASM Global Note
Turkey’s automotive industry has once again demonstrated its export strength and strategic importance within European supply chains. In the coming period, regulations based on origin rules and investments aimed at boosting domestic production will play a decisive role in shaping the sector’s outlook.
